Songs about Spring
As the winter that won’t end continues not to end, thoughts turn to Spring. At least my thoughts do; and my thoughts often are connected to music. So, for this installment of Art Views, I offer a playlist of Spring songs. Some presage its coming. Some burst with its joy and optimism. And a good number of them wallow in its ironic melancholy.
Tony Bennett/Bill Evans: You Must Believe in Spring
Blossom Dearie: They Say it’s Spring
Finzi: It was a Lover and His Lass from Let Us Garlands Bring
Nina Simone: It Might as Well Be Spring
Schubert: Shepherd on the Rock for soprano, clarinet and piano (Here’s a translation to English from the original German)
Frank Sinatra: Spring is Here
Vivaldi: Spring from the Four Seasons
Ella Fitzgerald: Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most
Wynton Marsalis: Spring Will be a Little Late This Year
