Reno Phil Concerts This Summer
Summer is upon us, and as usual, the Reno Phil has a number of really fun performances in the works. I am proud that my orchestra has a rich offering of music each summer, and this year is no exception. For this installment of Art Views, I thought I’d give a snapshot and links for you to check out.
Disney in Concert: A Dream is a Wish
June 24, 2023 @ 2:00 and 7:00 p.m.
Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts
Kids of every age will love this performance of Disney music from across the years. Videos from beloved Disney classics like Frozen, The Lion King, Aladdin, and Cinderella will be accompanied by the Reno Phil and wonderful singers performing live.
Patriotic Pops at the Field
July 3, 2023 @ 6:00 p.m.
Greater Nevada Field
While not quite an Independence Day concert (the Aces play a home game on the 4th of July and they need their field), this performance by the Reno Phil and Chorus will put everyone in a patriotic mood. After the concert, a fireworks spectacular awaits. Because this performance is on the day before Independence Day, audience and Reno Phil musicians will be able to celebrate the 4th at home (or elsewhere) with their families. Since moving to Reno I don’t think I have ever barbecued at home on the 4th because of this concert. This year I’ll be able to play AND grill!
Pops on the River: The Music of Motown
July 8, 2023 @5:00 p.m.
Glow Plaza Festival Grounds
One of the great Reno summer traditions is the Phil’s Pops on the River concert. A knockout party in which the audience dresses in themed costumes and has a wonderful time eating, drinking, and enjoying the music of the Phil. This year is no different. Well, it’s a little different. This year the performance moves down the street from Wingfield Park to the new Glow Plaza Festival Grounds at the new J Resort (formerly The Sands). Laura Jackson and the musicians of the Phil will be joined by wonderful guest artists presenting the classic songs of Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and more.
The show will be repeated at the beautiful Lake Tahoe Shakespeare stage at Sand Harbor on Monday, July 10, 2023 @ 7:30 p.m. As of this writing, this Tahoe performance is Sold Out, but click here to get on a waitlist.
Bravo on the Beach: A Tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein
August 7, 2023 @ 7:30 p.m.
Lake Tahoe Shakespeare stage
Led by Reno Phil associate conductor Jason Altieri, this concert presents the classic Broadway and film music of perhaps the most famous songwriting duo in our nation’s history, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. In this paradisaic setting, Altieri and the Phil will be joined by vocalists Ben Davis and Scarlett Strallen. Sadly (or happily depending on your perspective) this concert is also Waitlist Only at this point.
Please come join the Reno Phil for some terrific music and community this summer, and get your tickets for our 55th Season, which starts this Fall.
Scott Faulkner is principal bassist of the Reno Phil and Reno Chamber Orchestra.
