$10,000 Grant from Wells Fargo Foundation
RENO, NV (AUG 16, 2024) — PBS Reno Education Services is honored to receive a $10,000 grant from Wells Fargo Foundationwhich will enhance the station’s Curiosity Classroom workshops that reach more than 100,000 students each school year.
“Wells Fargo Foundation’s financial support of PBS Reno’s Curiosity Classroom workshops allows us to meet the high demand for our services in eight school districts across northern Nevada,” said Nancy Maldonado, PBS Reno Vice President of Development. “PBS Reno Curiosity Classroom workshops are presented to pre-K through 4th grade classrooms. They include high-quality video clips, a read-aloud, and a fun hands-on activity. Each workshop is a lesson in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and is aligned to Nevada Academic Content Standards, Common Core Standards, and Next Generation Science Standards. All materials are supplied, and students receive free books to build their home libraries. During the 2023-2024 school year, PBS Reno Education Services provided 6,959 workshops to 135,287 participating students and handed out 45,692 new books. We are grateful for the financial support we receive from Wells Fargo Foundation.”
PBS Reno Curiosity Classroom workshops are completely free for students to experience and for teachers to schedule in their curriculums. Each workshop features a lesson designed with state standards in mind, and a corresponding activity. Robotics dominate many of the workshops, delighting children from different grades with the potential of technology with age-appropriate materials. PBS Reno aims to give each student multiple educational experiences with a variety of robots before they reach 5th grade. Financial literacy also plays a prominent role in PBS Reno Curiosity Classroom workshops.
“Opening pathways to long-term financial stability and wealth building is a priority for Wells Fargo,” said Wendell Blaylock, Wells Fargo Nevada Senior Community Impact & Sustainability Specialist. “Wells Fargo is proud to provide a grant for the PBS Reno Curiosity Classrooms workshops to provide opportunities for learning and prepare young Nevadans for future economic advancement.”
