RENO, NV (SEP 11, 2024) — In response to the Davis Fire and the need to deliver fire status updates, evacuation orders, and other critical and ever-changing information, PBS Reno is partnering with 2 News Nevada (KTVN) to broadcast select newscasts produced by the Reno-based CBS affiliate on PBS Reno channel 5.1 and Spectrum Channel 785.

The Davis Fire has burned an estimated 5,646 acres since igniting September 7 in the Davis Creek Regional Park in Washoe Valley between Reno and Carson City. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has issued a State Declaration of Emergency to coordinate efforts to fight the Davis Fire. PBS Reno’s signal has not been impacted by the Davis Fire. As the fire continued to grow, PBS Reno and 2 News Nevada began collaborating on ways to ensure the community could still receive updates despite the signal loss.

“In unprecedented situations like this, we must all work together for the good of our region,” said Kurt Mische, PBS Reno President and CEO. “2 News Nevada is not able to deliver its signal to certain viewers due to the Davis Fire, and so we are carrying some of their newscasts to assist our colleagues and inform the public that depends on both of our organizations for news and information. We appreciate our friends at 2 News Nevada for their cooperation.”

“On behalf of KTVN 2 News Nevada I would like to express our sincere appreciation for KNPB PBS Reno partnering with us to simulcast several of our 2 News Nevada local news broadcasts,” said Andrew Perini, 2 News Nevada President and General Manager. “The Davis Fire has impacted KTVN’s transmitter on top of Slide Mountain causing a loss of signal coverage to our over the air, DirecTV, and Dish Network viewers. Our engineers are working 24/7 to get our signal back up but our efforts will largely be dependent on the progress of the fire. We know how important it is for KTVN 2 News Nevada and all of our local media outlets to serve our community with critical information in order to keep everyone safe and up to date. I could not be more proud of our local TV broadcast community coming together in this time of crisis in an effort keep our community informed and a special thank you to Kurt Mische, President and CEO of PBS Reno, for reaching out to help a fellow broadcaster.”

For viewers who cannot currently watch 2 News Nevada, they can watch 2 News Nevada newscasts on PBS Reno channel 5.1 and Spectrum Channel 785 during the following dates and times:

  • Wednesday, September 11 at 5:30pm
  • Thursday, September 12 at 6:30am
  • Thursday, September 12 at 5:30pm

“As public television broadcasters, we have an obligation to assist each other in times of need, and, more importantly, we have a responsibility to serve the public and keep our region informed about this serious fire situation,” said Megan Myers, PBS Reno Vice President of Content. “It’s just the right thing to do – neighbor helping neighbor – in times of need.”
