Be My Neighbor Day is Two Weeks Away!
Free, family-friendly community event hosted by PBS Reno promotes
early education, health & safety, and more!

RENO, NV (July 19, 2024)It’s going to be a beautiful day in the neighborhood when PBS Reno hosts its inaugural Be My Neighbor Day, a free community event on Saturday, August 3, 2024, 10am – 2pm, at Idlewild Park in Reno.

Be My Neighbor Day is a family-friendly event promoting early childhood education, health, safety and values highlighted on Daniel Tiger and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Children and parents alike will learn the importance of community-focused kindness and sharing by giving back to the community in which we live. PBS Reno will celebrate the rich cultural diversity of our neighbors across northern Nevada and incredible local resources through craft activities and a varied vendor space. Families can have pictures taken with Daniel Tiger and Katerina Kittycat, the stars of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.

For this inaugural event, PBS Reno has partnered with The Children’s Cabinet, Food Bank of Northern Nevada, and the RennerVation Foundation to fill the RennerVation Bus with personal hygiene supplies, school supplies, and non-perishable food for the community. Please bring your donations to the event on Saturday, August 3rd. If you want to drop off your donations ahead of the event, the RennerVation Bus will be parked at PBS Reno at 1670 N. Virginia Street starting Monday, July 22nd to Friday, August 2nd. Donations will be accepted during business hours, 9-5pm Monday – Friday. 

“We hope our community will join us and all the rest of our neighbors for a day of positive interaction, fun, and helping one another, following in the true Fred Rogers tradition,” said Kurt Mische, PBS Reno President and CEO.

During the Be My Neighbor Day event on August 3 at Idlewild Park, The Children’s Cabinet will be on site collecting personal hygiene items including:

  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Full size shampoo/conditioner
  • Travel size deodorant
  • Face wipes
  • Travel size sunscreen/lotion
  • Full size baby shampoo/brush/baby powder/baby wipes
  • Feminine hygiene products
     

“Community support is at the heart of The Children's Cabinet,” said Kim Young, CEO of The Children’s Cabinet. “Events like Be My Neighbor Day highlight the incredible impact we can have when we come together to support one another. By uniting as neighbors, we not only strengthen our community but also embody the compassionate spirit of Fred Rogers. Together we can make a difference, one neighbor at a time.”

During the Be My Neighbor Day event on August 3 at Idlewild Park, Food Bank of Northern Nevada will collect non-perishable food including:

  • Canned meals: stews, soups, spaghetti/ravioli (low-sodium preferred)
  • Protein: peanut butter, tuna, salmon, chicken, dried or canned beans
  • Grains: whole grain cereal, oatmeal, brown rice, whole grain pasta
  • Fruits: canned (packed in 100% juice or light syrup), dried fruit, applesauce (no sugar added), 100% fruit juice boxes
  • Vegetables: canned (no salt added and/or low-sodium preferred)
  • Dairy: shelf stable milk
  • Baby products: formula, infant cereal, baby food

During the Be My Neighbor Day event on August 3 at Idlewild Park, the RennerVation Foundation will collect supplies for teachers including:

  • Notebooks
  • Composition notebooks
  • Pencils
  • Index cards
  • Markers
  • Ink pens
  • Sharpies
  • Dry erase markers
  • Tissue boxes
  • Staplers
  • Glue sticks
  • Graph paper
  • Construction paper
  • Post-it notes (small and poster sized)
  • Command Strips
  • Masking tape
  • Hand wipes
  • Color pencils


“Kids need to have opportunities,” said Jeremy Renner, RennerVation Foundation Founder. “When they have opportunities, our communities can grow.”

“Every kid belongs to every one of us,” said Kym Renner, RennerVation Foundation CEO and President. “It takes a village and we are all better together.”
