JOB TITLE: Broadcast Operations Assistant
REPORTS TO: Broadcast Content Supervisor

JOB SUMMARY & EXPECTATIONS:
The Broadcast Operations Assistant is responsible for setting up, controlling, and monitoring television broadcasting equipment to ensure smooth transmission of programs and station breaks. This position involves being on call and may require work during weekends, evenings, and early mornings. The assistant will collaborate with our broadcast partner, Centralcast, to manage daily media logs required by PBS Reno for broadcast schedules. Key responsibilities include quality checking interstitials and full-length programs, addressing operational issues, and occasionally handling production tasks. Additionally, the assistant will support the Traffic Manager with on-air broadcast duties and programming needs, including producing daily logs for multiple broadcast channels.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Collaborate with Centralcast (HUB) and PBS Reno (Spoke) to ensure accurate broadcast schedules and media availability, addressing any on-air issues.
- Review programming logs to confirm that content airs as scheduled.
- Maintain on-air continuity and minimize disruptions to programming.
- Operate broadcast control equipment to deliver programming elements (e.g., shows, interstitials, station IDs) in the correct sequence.
- Learn and utilize Mediator software for uploading files, building reports, and ensuring log accuracy.
- Learn Overture graphics to create and publish on-air graphics like bugs, Lower Thirds, and dynamic crawls.
- Monitor Emergency Alert System broadcasts, ensuring alerts are rebroadcast for public safety.
- Assist with live pledge nights, ensuring audio levels and captions are correct, and record programs for archival and possible future air.
- Log the actual airtime of programs and interstitials.
- Monitor transmitter operation to comply with FCC regulations and best practices.
- Observe on-air monitors for transmission issues and respond appropriately to technical difficulties.
- Listen to audio feeds and check audio meters for proper operation.
- Use video test equipment to adjust video quality to specifications.
- Respond promptly to equipment failures and seek assistance as needed.
- Coordinate daily with the PBS Reno Production Department to ensure all necessary media is available.
- Fulfill media requirements for upcoming broadcasts by checking reports with Centralcast.
- Quality check all incoming production material and use ‘Vidchecker’ to confirm compliance for air.
- Prepare email reports detailing transmission problems and corrective actions taken.
- Assist in producing and maintaining daily broadcast logs.
- Support the Traffic Manager in scheduling future program grids.
- Collaborate with the Traffic team on monthly Nielsen/Enames reports and listing services.
- Help with weekly promo requests, including building and scheduling promos and underwriting credits.
- Perform other assigned duties as needed.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIRED (an equivalent amount of training, education and experience will be considered):
- Familiarity of TV broadcast systems, workflows, and distribution.
- Knowledge of FCC regulations.
- Proficient with Microsoft OS, office suite; IT and network skills for broadcast related equipment.
- Experience with both IP-based and legacy broadcast equipment.
- Ability to multitask effectively.
- Minimum of a High school Diploma; some college or technical school preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational skills and willingness to help others.
- Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize assignments.
- Attention to detail and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures, even under pressure.
- Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Willingness to work extended hours including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Available for emergency response 24/7, as needed.
- Capable of responding to station disaster recovery
- Must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 75 pounds, and be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Must have the right to work in the United States.
